Confidentiality in School Based Counselling

I think most of us would agree that expecting our counsellor to keep what we tell them private is a given.  Yet, when it comes to our children and young people receiving the same treatment is somehow different.  In my experience, parents sometimes feel uncomfortable with the idea of their child talking openly with a therapist.  Or worry about not knowing the content of the conversation.  Since our children were born, we have nurtured each and every step of their life steps.  Why should we not automatically be party to this one?

As both a parent and a school counsellor I can identify with this discomfort.  Yet I know and truly understand the crucial part confidentiality plays in the therapeutic process.  Unless our clients know we can hold their "stuff" sacred, sharing and therefore further explorations will be impeded.

In Scotland we determine the legal age of consents as 16 years old.  And from 12 years old, we encourage children to be part of any decisions made involving their care.  I would like to use this space to reassure parents and carers of children and young people, that all appropriately trained counsellors/psychotherapists will only hold children's confidences up to the point of harm.  This means that, if the therapist becomes aware the child is at risk of harm they will inform the Child Protection Officer at their school.  In turn, the appropriate adults will be made aware.

We are privileged to work closely with our children and I value this in each and every session.  My pupil clients know I am safe and trustworthy and so feel able to talk freely about whatever they need to.  This allows them the space to grow into their version of a young adult in the counselling room.  This process complements parenting and teaching.  School Based Psychotherapy is a critical resource in our country, and everyone involved with children and young people should be made aware of everything it can offer.
