The “screendemic” is what the media is terming our current overuse of smartphones, computers, tablets, and TVs—which has escalated since the COVID-19 pandemic. With remote work, online learning, and social media engagement at all-time highs, excessive screen time has been reported to lead to negative consequences for mental health, physical well-being, and social interactions.
Reported Effects of the Screendemic:
1. Mental Health Issues – Increased anxiety, depression, and digital addiction, especially among younger people.
2. Physical Strain – Eye strain (digital eye syndrome), poor posture, and sleep disturbances from blue light exposure.
3. Reduced Attention Span – Overstimulation from constant notifications and fast-paced content.
4. Social Disconnection – More virtual interactions but fewer deep, meaningful in-person connections.
5. Cognitive Impacts – Reduced ability to focus, think critically, and retain information.
What Should We Do About It?
It’s all too easy to feel overwhelmed when these difficulties are highlighted. Sometimes even more so when it’s our children effected. But there are some things we could consider. Such as:
1. Set Screen Time Limits – Use apps to track and reduce screen time. Or return to paper tracking!
2. Prioritize Digital Detoxes – Designate tech-free hours or days, especially before bed.
3. Encourage Real-World Activities – Exercise, read books, socialize in person, or take up hobbies that don’t involve screens.
4. Optimize Screen Usage – Use blue light filters, adjust brightness, and take frequent breaks (20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds).
5. Practice Mindful Consumption – Be intentional about screen use—avoid mindless scrolling and prioritize quality over quantity.
6. Model Healthy Behavior – Parents, teachers, and employers can set positive examples for balanced screen use. This is a big opportunity!
Maybe a realistic goal isn’t to eliminate screens but to use them consciously and in moderation.
If you would like to discuss these concerns further, please join me on Parent Platform. Our next online meeting is scheduled for Wednesday March 12th at 615pm. For £15 per head you will receive the latest advice on screen usage and an hour with myself and others to discuss difficulties and how to overcome them.
